Recommendations for a Safe Trick-or-Treating

Trick-or-treating is a favorite tradition for many families. Children love the idea of dressing up and collecting lots of candy!

As parents, we need to be alert of the dangers and risks associated with trick-or-treating in order to implement all the necessary precautions so that our children and families are able to safely enjoy these celebrations.

Here are some important recommendation to keep in mind:

  • Choose carefully the places where your children go trick-or-treating
  • Remain alert of the people they get their candy from.
  • Avoid busy roads and streets with heavy traffic.
  • Inspect all the candy and treats before your children eat it.
  • Throw away any candy that has already been opened or seems to have been tampered with.
  • Do not accept home made, unwrapped treats.
  • Make sure to keep close and direct supervision of your child/children at all times while trick or treating. Holding their hand is highly recommended.
  • Teach older children how to call 911 in case of an emergency.
  • Avoid distractions such as talking on the phone or texting while accompanying your children.
  • Wear or carry glow in the dark item/s to ensure you and your child can be easily seen by all vehicles.

Children are generally taught not to accept candy from strangers. Make sure to explain to them in an understandable way that this celebration is an exemption to that rule for the sole reason that they are under your direct supervision.
